I somehow made it through high school and most of college with an ovo sound radio sticker on my mac without being hatecrimed. Anyways… going through October without listening to Drake is like going to the mall in December and not hearing Mariah Carey. It’s just not possible! The concept of ‘underground Drake’ is nonexistent, but the day Care Package came out i fell to my knees. I was no longer going to be different because i listened to Days In The East or Draft Day on SoundCloud.
Drake has a bunch of (time) in (location) songs, but 4PM in Calabasas is my favorite. I only recently learned this song is a Diddy diss. Also this is embarrassing but this song put me onto SWV… always always on your mind…

Apple Music suggested this album and i listened because the album art was speaking to me. It was saying things like.. r/malelivingspace. I had not heard of Pony Express before, but The Eastwood Dive is a pretty solid slowgaze or slowcore album or whatever the hell the correct microgenre is. I couldnt find too much info about this album online except for anti-hygiene sites like rateyourmusic, but i did discover Jeff Cloud and Jason Martin of Starflyer 59 are in this band. Pony Express sounds pretty similar to them, so i recommend this album if you like Starflyer 59 or (whatever prefix)-gaze.

Big fan of Bubble Pop Electric and Luxurious. I also love the music video for Cool. I read this Vogue article with Sophie Muller and she said something about it being Hitchcock inspired.

Billie note: Lost Highway has the most memorable opening credits out of any movie ive watched. Thanks to this song... this shit melted my face off. Ive watched this only twice but in theaters (shoutout Ragtag cinema)(and Lais best projectionist ever) and i think the sound may have added to my experience.

According to Chino Moreno, Saturday Night Wrist is the phenomenon of passing out on your arm and waking up with nerve damage to your wrist. I dont really know if i can relate to that. But i do love the album cover taken from 70s adult film, Roxanna. I havent been able to find much about it online, but ive seen the alternate covers also using Roxanna screengrabs
I really like the last few songs on this album. Combat, Kimdracula, and Drive. I was obsessed with Drive all month. I like Deftones covers, their sound always comes through. The Massive Attack Protection drum sample was perfect for Drive.

Some of my favorite Deftones songs are their trip hop influenced ones – Teenager, Lucky You, Drive. Team Sleep is supposedly Chino’s project trying to incorporate Massive Attack’s sound, which i can kind of see.
