What are your favorite Pharrell beats? The Neptunes
I was listening to Kelis’s Kaleidoscope yesterday. Most of the beats on that album are so notable, they would probably have a spot on a Pharrell’s ‘greatest hits’ compilation. That led me to thinking about what would that album would look like. I texted a handful of friends and asked them for their favorite Pharrell/Neptunes beats... and if they had to narrow it down to five, what would they be?

This question is pretty hard to answer. You think you have your five... then you go on the wikipedia page with Pharrell’s entire production discography and scroll until your thumb gets tired. Now you’re playing a frantic game of Spoons, constantly swapping shit out. I still didn’t really answer the question because I have a whole list of honorable mentions that added up to like 20🤣. But my friends did answer thankfully. Their answers lie below...

Not tryna glaze Pharrell while discrediting his collaborators who dont get nearly as much attention or credit. Shoutout Chad Hugo. He was equally as responsible for most of these productions. My parents immigrated from the Philippines to Virginia, just like his. This should go unsaid, but artists should be paid fairly (Kelis). I hope Chad’s lawsuit against Pharrell is going well. May he get his bag...

Im from Virginia, where aint shit to do but cook...

Pharrell’s production is addicting. I chose these songs as my favorites, but choosing five/six and then ranking them were both pretty impossible tasks, to be quite frank.

I think that while his sound varies from song to song, the one definitive thing about his production is that his energy is a through line. It always makes me wanna dance, it always makes me wanna groove; it feels coy and fun. Biking to Pharrell production is an experience.

I appreciate Pharrell’s contributions to the art. He’s definitely in the top 5 when it comes to hip hop producers. You gotta appreciate his versatility and longevity. He just feels like one of those guys thats been present in the medium my whole life. Hes also one of those guys that has transcended his title as just a producer. I feel like hes bigger than that. Hes like a pop icon at this point. With that stupid hat moment.

the incredible impact of pharrell’s production cannot be overstated. the illustrious synths paired with the iconic snappy snare, creating a texturized soundscape that brings a familiar warmth to the listener. the iconic usage of the woodblock snare specifically. heavy, dry, with an organic touch, now basically a trademark for pharrell, making his production easy to spot for even the most casual fan.

while pharrell’s undeniable impact and success has been spotlighted by the general public, the real background architect lies with Chad Hugo. without his heavy lifting on the majority of their famous tracks, it would sound empty and truly devoid of the sound that made pharrell famous. without the layers of synthesizer dissonance, largely attributed to chad, the drum loops of pharrell would be overbearing.

although, it’s no question that pharrell’s cultural influence on music, across all genres, and across all artists of now, truly led the music industry into a vibrant renaissance. the question of what music would sound like today if the boy from Virginia never started drumming, often runs through my mind.

I didnt list it, but Virginia is probably the most menacing hip hop song of all time. Lowkey actually one of the Offset songs on Without Warning might have Virginia beat but that’s whack and like comparing Edgar Allan Poe to Rupi Kaur. Edgar A. Poe = Clipse and Rupi Kaur = Offset. Also EAP went to school in Virginia where my Dad taught (UVA). I had to see his depressing ass dorm room a million times because when we had guests they wanted to see it. Lowkey was the khia asylum. Anyways I mentioned earlier, but my parents and I immigrated to Virginia. Some of the greatest hip hop artists ever IMO came outta VA... Missy Elliott, Timbo, Pusha, (No) Malice, Pharrell, Chad, D’Angelo, Trey Songz. Also Chris Brown but i dont fr listen to him much anymore. Those artists grew up a couple hours from where i did and deadass made music that defined eras of culture. There’s something in the VA air...

Out of who i consider notable producers from that era.. Kevin Briggs, Just Blaze, The-Dream, Kanye, Tricky Stewart, JD... Timbaland, Pharrell, and Chad wash all of them. Maybe not Kanye but idk. My point is that those Virginia cats let me know i can do it too (Pharrell reference... #deep)

Overall, asking people their favorite songs was fun and more introspective than i thought it would be. It started a lot of conversations and made me more appreciative of The Neptunes/Pharrell’s work, but more so the people I talked to. Most of the people i asked are artists, if not DJs/tastemakers. Knowing people in my immediate community appreciate the same media from 20 years ago made me feel very connected. It was also special to hear how different people relate to the same tracks. Ive heard Milkshake a thousand times, but now im going to think about Nadir listening to it 🤣

I like to complain about the current state of pop music. I delusionally like to think i am well-versed in 90s and 2000s pop and hip hop culture, but doing this and going through wikipedia made me realize i havent even experienced a fraction of what that era produced. Hope you enjoyed this. I know i probably missed some good ones, feel free to shoot me a dm (or a text if you have my number) (or an email if you on that) and let me know any heat i missed 🍔
